"A dream come true."
Review by Bonnie Wooden from Los Angeles, CA who visited the city in September 2006 as a couple without children.

The best part:
Groggy upon arrival, turning a corner, and rising out of the sidewalk....The Acropolis lit up at night. It sent chills up my spine. Also, lingering over red wine on the sidewalks of The Plaka.

The worst part:
The air pollution on the main streets is BAD. After a day of walking around, you reak of gasoline.

"We were disappointed in our visit to Athens. Except for the visit to the Acropolis there was nothing that would inspire us to return."
Review by a visitor from Vancouver, Canada who visited the city in September 2006 as a couple without children.

The best part:
our visit to the Acropolis

The worst part:
Arriving at our hotel and finding out that we had no reservation although we had a confirmation from Travel Zone indicating that we did in fact have a reservation for the date indicated. Also, paying top dollar for our hotel only to find out that it was in one of the worst areas of Athens. In addition, the taxi driver who took us from the airport to our hotel ripped us off for 45 Euros.

Review by Komorn from Paris, France who visited the city in July 2006 with a group of friends.

The best part:
The Acropolis was a wonderful experience, the Agora and the ceramic cimetery are nice places too. But what I liked the most was spending some time just walking-around in Athens, and meeting very friendly people !!

The worst part:

Stayed at the The Orion and Driades hotel
We were both so pleased by this fantastic hotel, really cheap (35€ for a double bedroom, with your own washbasin, but (very clean) lavatory and WC outside)... People are very nice. On the roof, there is a large sundeck where you have a sensational panorama of Athens !

"Interesting, relaxing, we felt peacefully happy"
Review by Arribas from Spain who visited the city in August 2006 as a couple without children.

The best part:
The greek people, their are kind and in every moment ready to help us, specially at the hotel

The worst part:
Something that you can't avoid. It was august, so too many people in everywhere!!!

The best attraction:
The area of plaka and monastiraki and the ambiance of well-being there. The history appears everywhere

The best restaurant:
Tavernas near metro monastiraki

The worst restaurant:
Food is good in general but if you go to restaurants too touristical you may get less and too expensive for the bad quality. Do note if there are greek people. It is the best to know if it is good or not

"The residents of Athens made us feel very welcome."
Review by a visitor from Palo Alto, CA, USA who visited the city in June 2006 with a family group.

The best part:
Walking around the Acropolis at night. There is nothing in the rest of the world like the magic of the night lit Acropolis on a warm summer night.

The worst part:
Nightmare at the Athens airport because Olympic Air did not have the attendents/pilots needed for their flights to London on June 24. We were scheduled for a 13:30 flight, finally got out at 19:00. We will never fly Olympic again.

Stayed at the Acropolis House Hotel
The Acropolis House was listed in the Lonely Planet Guide to Greece as an excellent, moderately priced hotel near the Acropolis and other ancient attractions. This is exactly what we found. The staff of the hotel was unfailingly courteous, it was spotlessly clean, and we were happy to be there. Without a doubt, we would stay there again.

"WONDERFUL!"
Review by Constantin Omat from Spain & Romania ( we all live in different places) who visited the city in June 2006 with a family group.

The best part:
My family and I stayed in Athens 8 days. There were a lot of places we wanted to visit. The best experience was finally finding the best gyro after 5 days (2 days before leaving) & also we found the best ice cream the first night, that meant we ate ice-cream everyday after that.

The worst part:
My husband got sick after he ate something somewhere and vomited for 3 days, no even water his stomach took. Thanks to Starbucks that provided to us hot water every day to make tea for him at NO CHARGE. every place wanted to charge for hot water only: 1 Euro, Starbucks was the only one that gave it to us for free. We are not Americans, but everywhere we go American businesses are the only ones that provides people basic services for free, including use of the bathroom, napkins, plastic spoons, etc, and hot water! everywhere we go we look for Starbucks including Paris & Rome last year. Also, we have a bad experience with a very nasty bus driver.

The best attraction:
All of them, the whole Athens!

The worst attraction:
there was not a Worst attraction. We just believe that attractions close too early in the summer. They should stay open till about 9 p.m. because it is still daylight & it's too hot during the day.

The worst restaurant:
Coming back from Kessariani Monastery. We stopped in a restaurante that said in broken spanish that tourist are not welcome

The best cafe:
Starbucks of course! for the reason i already mentioned. Free hot water!!! jeje

"short and difficult to manage"
Review by a visitor from USA who visited the city in June 2006 as a single leisure traveller.

The best part:
The day I arrived I walked to the Acropolis and it was free. I was really happy. There are so many things to do in Athens that have an admission fee that it's really nice to have things waived once in a while. It would be nice if these free days were better publicized. I also used the tourist bus, but again, it would be nice if this were better publicized and if it actually ran on schedule.

The worst part:
The tourist bus ran so far off schedule that I ended up spending at least half of my day (I only had a day and a half to explore) waiting for the bus. It was supposed to be every 30 minutes, and if I arrived 5 minutes before it was supposed to arrive, I still waited up to 40 minutes. Also, the bus I was on didn't even have the announcement system going until 15 minutes into the trip when I requested that they announce which stop we were at. Additionally, despite having really positive experiences with Greek people outside of Athens, there were many people who were extremely rude to me in the city. I come from another big tourist city and can understand that tourists are an annoyance, but there is no reason to be completely rude to the people who come and visit your city.

The best attraction:
I enjoyed the Acropolis

"Very enjoyable. Much to see Plaka, historical sites and wonderful museums."
Review by a visitor from British Columbia, Canada who visited the city in April 2006 as a single leisure traveller.

The best part:
The Greek people were helpful, friendly and courteous, and all seemed to speak English. The Metro was convenient, effecient and inexpensive. Also staions very clean and pleasant. Lots of signs and information in English.

The worst part:
1) The taxi driver from the airport charged us 36 euros. We found out from our hotel that it should be 25 euros. We met several other tourists who had been cheated by taxi drivers in Athens. We suggest that the fare from the airport to city should be a fixed rate and it should be clearly advertized at the airport. 2) Trying to find the tourist office and when we did find it, no information brochures. 3) It was hard to find information about all ferries between the islands so that we could plan our trip. It would be helpful to have brochures with schedules available at the tourist office. 4) overpriced hotels with overpriced breakfast for food that was not good (Rio Athens and Attalos)

The best attraction:
Roman Agora

Stayed at the Hotel Rio Athens
Rio Athens has a picture on their website that looks nothing like the hotel. It shows a white building against a blue sky. In fact, it is a rather grey dingy building with other dingy buildings adjoining it. It is in a more run down part of town than we had expected. However, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the room was quiet, though very small. The Attalos is a very good location and the room was quiet and comfortable. Breakfasts at both hotels were full buffet, but were disappointing and not worth the price. In future we would not pay for included breakfast.

The worst part:

"Underated - had mixed reviews before we went,...now that I have been there I recommend it!"
Review by a visitor from Beverly Hills, CA who visited the city in May 2006 as a single leisure traveller.

The best part:
The Acropolis was definitely the highlight ! I recommend taking a guided tour as it adds so much more to the discovery of the different monuments and the architecture. Also, I loved the jewelery shops in the "flea market". Hardly what one would call the flea market in the US. I also enjoyed our hotel's location in the Plaka.

"It was very nice... lots of people, but certain quieter streets had their charms."
Review by a visitor from Webster, NY, USA who visited the city in April 2006 as honeymooners.

The best part:
The food! I love that you could buy Gyro Pita and kebab and not have to sit down at a taverna to have dinner. It was a very cost effective way to have a meal and very delicious! Also, Athens was beautiful. A gorgeous place. I felt safe there and wasn't worried about thieves like in other cities. I LOVED the public market where everyone was selling fresh fruit, vegetables, meat, etc. It was great to see locals going about their daily routine. When I go to a new place I don't like to be a "tourist"... I like to do things that the locals do. The public market was excellent.

The worst part:
The public transport/metro strike. It happened on the day we were to leave for home. We had already purchased our 10 Euro metro ticket (for two people) -- we did it ahead of time so that we could just go to the metro and be on our way..... and then two days later when we went to leave our hotel we were told that the metro wasn't running. We have an unused 10 Euro ticket for the metro and could not sell it back because all of the offices were closed. On top of that we had to pay for a taxi and spent ANOTHER 25 Euro. We we're too happy about spending all of that money and also having a ticket worth 10 Euro that we will never be able to used. Obviously we understand that public transport often has strikes, but we had poor luck and had to pay for it.

The best attraction:
The acropolis was very nice and a good thing to do for an afternoon.

The worst attraction:
Syntagma Square.... we did not understand why people go to see it. It was a nice square but not too exciting.

The best cafe:
Cup&Cino -- good prices, good service, good coffee.

The hotel was very nice and their roof-top bar had a beautiful view of the Acropolis! The service was good and friendly and it was a nice place to stay. One comment I do have to make on hotels in Athens in general is that they are pretty high in price even for the lower classes. We stayed in comparable hotels on the islands and paid HALF the price. But it is to be expected in the city, I guess.

"Loved it -- would recommend Athens as a starting point -- spend a few days and move onto some of the more scenic islands"
Review by a visitor from Bayport, NY, USA who visited the city in August 2005 with a group of friends.

The best part:
The historic sites, the people were so friendly and most everyone spoke English or made an attempt to help!
