In July 1984 a jazz concert during the Istanbul Festival at the Atatürk Cultural Center ignited local interest in jazz and led ten years later to the foundation of the annual Istanbul Jazz Festival. In the years since it's inception, thousands of performers have given concerts all over the city including many internationally famous names that might not normally fall under the umbrella of the term Jazz - e.g. Eric Clapton, Sting, Lou Reed, Bryan Ferry and Björk. The festival takes place in July and visitors can book tickets in advance through the website. The festival offers concerts all across the city including many in historic venues.
