The Best Monuments in Europe

A monument can be defined as a structure explicitly created to commemorate a person or an event. A good example would be Trafalgar Square in London which commemorates the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805, a British naval victory of the Napoleonic Wars. It can also be a structure which has become very important to a social group like a city or a town, as a part of their remembrance of a glorious past such as the Colosseum in Rome or the Acropolis of Athens. In both cases, monuments are usually used to improve the appearance of a city or location.

In this selecton we picked the most important monuments which are usually the most visited attractions all over Europe, excluding museums and palaces. Enjoy this celebration of human creativity, imagination and genius from the beginning of civilization to the most recent times...
