European Tourist Office - Mail Services

Mail Services

Mail services and post offices are generally very fast and efficient in Europe. Letters and postcards take usually a couple of days to reach any destination within Europe, up to five days to North America and a week to Australia. It may take longer if you're sending mail from a remote area.

Please note that there is no common postage stamp system in Europe yet. Postage stamps can only be used in the country in which you buy them, even when priced in euro.

Poste Restante

If you're travelling through countries and not staying at a hotel, you can still receive mail by using the poste restante system, available at main post offices in larger cities. Once you're account is set=up, just asked for your mail to be sent to you care of Poste Restante. To collect your mail, you'll simply need to prove your identity by presenting a passport or an ID card. Note that mail from overseas is usually only kept for one month.
