SECURITY AND HOW TO BE SAFE

Europe is a very safe place to travel but even so, you still should avoid poorly lit and/or deserted streets, buildings and parking lots. Pickpockets are relatively common in Europe and as a result it is preferable to carry money in the form of traveler’s checks, keep your cash and valuables well concealed and wear minimal jewelry especially in crowds.

Emergency number: 112
To contact the emergency services in any EU country, dial 112.

More information about the emergency call number 112.

Loss or theft
Report any theft to the local police. You will need to enclose the police report when making your insurance or compensation claim. Cancel any lost or stolen credit cards immediately. If your passport has been stolen, report it to your country’s consulate or embassy as well as to the police.

Insurance
It is always preferable to have travel insurance to cover unexpected medical and dental expenses as well as loss or damage to your belongings. Very often, credit card companies if used to buy your flights or vacation packages, offer some kind of insurance. Please call them prior to departure to check the type of coverage you can benefit from them. If you need to buy a special insurance policy, we advise you to choose one that pays all expenses directly for you rather than one that reimburses you later. If you anticipate doing any particular sports or activities such as skiing, snow-boarding, scuba diving or sailing, you should also check with your insurance company if your policy covers them.
