WHEN TO GO...

The best time to visit Europe depends of your itinerary and the purpose of your trip. As part of the septentrional hemisphere, the European continent is warmer, dryer during the summer months from June to August. For obvious reasons those are the most popular months and huge crowds are to be found during those months in all touristic areas, from Scandinavia's arctic circle where many visitors are attracted by the prospect of the midnight sun, down to Greece's or the Baleare's islands, where the heat and the Mediterranean sea are the perfect combination for beach vacations. For more information about Europe's weather, click here.

As an alternative, April, May, September and October should be considered since school vacations have not yet started or are finished. Here is a list of links detailing Europe's major countries school vacations:
United Kingdom, Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland, Italy, The Netherlands.

A good summary by Eurydice, the information network on Education in Europe. As for the mountainous areas, the Pyrenees, the Alps and the Alpennines have their own unique weather with short Summers and long winters with heavy snowfalls. The best months for skiing are usually January, February and March and the best hiking/trekking season is from June to September.
