European Tourist Office - Telephones

Telephones
Each country in Europe has its own, generally partially state-owned, phone company.

Public phones
With the emergence of cell phones, the need for public phone is rapidly disappearing. You can still find some in all European countries in or around public places such as airports, train or subway stations and libraries. Most of them work with phone cards that can be purchased at local convenient stores, cigarette outlets or newsstands. Some of them do accept credit cards, either directly or through the operator. Please note that international calls are usually very expensive at public phones even when calling within Europe.
