Visas and Passports
Schengen Countries - European Union Countries
You will not need a visa for travelling within the EU if you are a citizen of an EU country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway or Switzerland. There are many other countries whose nationals do not need a visa if visiting the EU for three months or less. These include the candidate countries Bulgaria and Romania (but not Turkey), Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand and the United States. If in doubt, check with the nearest consulate of any EU country.
If you get a visa for any EU country (except Ireland and the United Kingdom) or for Iceland or Norway, also known as the 'Schengen countries' (please read Schengen countries, it will automatically allow you to travel freely throughout the Schengen area. The Schengen rules are the part of EU law that aim to remove all internal border controls, but put in place effective controls at the external borders and introduce a common visa policy. Ireland and the United Kingdom do not participate in the aspects that relate to frontiers.
You will need a national visa to visit the UK, Ireland and the new member states. Some new member states, however, may accept Schengen visas or residence permits of Schengen countries, so check with their consulates.
To get a Schengen Visa and if you intend to visit only one Schengen country, you must apply at the Embassy or Consulate of that particular country. For a list of Embassies and consulates click here
If you intend to visit several Schengen countries, you must apply for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country which is your main destination.
If you intend to visit several Schengen countries but do not have a main destination, you should apply for a visa at the Embassy or Consulate of the country which is your first point of entry.
